The ImageLab Research Group http://imagelab.ing.unimore.it/imagelab offers a PhD position to a highly motivated and skilled international candidate to take their PhD studies over the period 2009-2012 with the Lab. ImageLab is a well recognized research group in Computer Vision and Pattern Recogntion in Europe and world-wide with an established track record of high-end publications and research projects. Two positions are available: the first position will be in the area of multi-sensor activity recognition mainly working in computer vision paradigms and multi-sensor data analysis for security and surveillance, while the second will be on 3D computer vision for industrial applications.

Applications are invited for a PhD position in the field of medical imaging in the Vision Image Processing and Sound (VIPS) group at the Dept. of Computer Science of the University of Verona (Italy).

The position is for three years full time officially starting in Jan. 2009 and it is funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MiUR). However, an earlier date could eventually be agreed upon request.

The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine announces the launch of the 2010-2011 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship for Mid-Career Professionals. This is a ten-month, non-degree program for Ukrainian mid-career professionals who have a completed professional degree and at least five years of substantial professional experience in the corresponding field. English proficiency is required.

Machine learning for uncertainty quantification of reservoir models

The candidate will join a dynamic and diverse team of post-docs and PhDs lead by Prof. Mike Christie. The research carried out by the team addresses aspects of uncertainty quantification including stochastic optimisation methods, geostatistics, machine learning, and employs high-level scientific computation (including a 84 node Linux cluster). The research is funded by a consortium of oil companies, and the skills acquired in while studying for the PhD are likely to be applicable to a wide range of areas, including the oil industry.

We invite applications for a full-time Post-doctoral Fellowship with the Space Physics and Energetic Particles Group at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, supervised by Prof. David Ruffolo. The successful applicant will work with researchers and students at Mahidol University on computer simulations of the magnetic field line random walk and energetic particle or cosmic ray transport in a turbulent plasma; connections with theory and observations will be encouraged. Our group collaborates closely with several Thai and overseas institutions. The one-year appointment will begin around November 1, 2009, with a possible extension for a second year.

Faculty of Humanities, Institute for Area Studies The Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) is responsible for researchers who are active in the fields of relations with East, South and Central and Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The Institute is divided into a School for Asian Studies and a School for Middle Eastern Studies. A multidisciplinary approach which comprises both the modern and the traditional periods is typical for the teaching and research within this Institute, whereby the knowledge of the source language is essential. The research of the approximately 75 staff members (including 20 professors) brings together the study of such subjects as history, law, economy, literature, religion and philology of the areas mentioned, both in the present day and in ancient times.
Starting September 2009 (or later if necessary) the Leiden Institute for Area Studies has two full time (38 hrs) vacancies, available as 4 year PhD positions and/or 3 year Post-Doctoral fellowships.

The Spemann Graduate School for Biology and Medicine (SGBM, http://www.sgbm.uni-freiburg.de/) at the University of Freiburg, Germany invites applications for 3-year PhD scholarships in the fields of Protein Structure and Function Synthetic Biology and Signalling Neurosciences Immunology/Virology Molecular Medicine Developmental Biology Molecular Plant Sciences.

PhD student is offered to do research on quasi-static analysis and hysteresis systems at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Barcelona.
This research project develops a rigorous and comprehensive mathematical understanding of models in Quantum Chemistry in the presence of an external magnetic field. The programme addresses the existence and uniqueness of a ground state and excited states, for various fields in (i) Hartree-Fock type models, and (ii) Thomas-Fermi type models. Moreover, the objective is to identity, explore and develop relevant links between the various Variational Methods, with a view to providing a more integrated approach to their use in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and initiating new areas of application within Quantum Chemistry, with possible use in numerical studies.
Dear friends,

The Educational Advising Center (EAC) is glad to invite all interested to attend the Pre-Departure Orientation which will be held on 26 June 2009 (11AM - 5PM) at the conference room of American Councils: Kyiv, vul. Melnykova 63.

The next session of the English Speaking Club - Osvita will take place in our office on June 25, 2009 at 6.30 pm. The topic of discussion is Job Interviews.

A PhD fellowship (2 years, renewable for another 2 years) is available on a research project that seeks to improve our understanding of the transport of dissolved organic matter from agricultural land to surface water at the scale of small catchments.

Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships at the Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen and The Danish National Centre for Social Research (SFI) for appointment in October 2009, or in accordance with further agreement.

The PhD programme provides PhD students with a strong research based degree which opens for a variety of careers. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, teaching and other forms of public research dissemination. The PhD programme can be undertaken as a three year full-time study within the framework of the 5+3 programme or as a four year full time study within the framework of the 4+4 programme.

The PhD programme of Welfare, Governance and Citizenship within the Department of Society and Globalisation, Roskilde University, hereby announces a PhD scholarship for a PhD project on a comparative study of ‘Citizenship, Volunteering and Organised Civil Society - A European perspective'. (The PhD project is described more in detail at the homepage of ISG: www.ruc.dk/isg/phd-programme).  The scholarship will be available from 1st of September 2009 or soon after.

We award a one-year-scholarship to an outstanding individual to contribute to research in one of the following areas of strength of the chair: Modern societies as knowledge societies, science studies, consumption, climate and society.
