The Eastern Iowa Community Colleges received a $1.6 million grant to teach students about careers in energy and environmental sciences. The grant was awarded by the National Science Foundation, which initially awarded the seed money to start the Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center in 1994, said Ellen Kabat-Lensch, the center's executive director. The $1.6 million grant will be awarded over four years.
Claire Malsch didn't have a pillow, a lamp or a drying rack for her dishes when she moved to Baton Rouge. While a trip home or a visit to a local department store might be easy for some students, Malsch can't go home to get the essentials - she's spending a year away from her home in France to study business at the University.
