Research under CDKN is designed to link closely with the wider goals of CDKN of assisting developing country decision makers with expanding understanding and achieving policy changes needed for climate compatible development. Research under CDKN is different to normal research programmes that focus purely on research excellence, for two reasons. Firstly, in addition to research excellence, we encourage research to be results-focussed. Policy impact is central to the whole research project from conception to post-project evaluation. Secondly, we create a closer working relationship with research project award holders, to ensure improved research and policy uptake and share the skills of our Alliance partners and other award holders including technical skill-bases, policy-uptake experience and networks. CDKN Research Output?s guiding principles are to design high quality research on climate and development, ensuring that it is „demand-led' and considered a priority by developing country policy makers.

The aim of the PhD project is to explore the role of empathy in social cognition. When surveying the current debate (in philosophy, developmental psychology, social neuroscience etc.) it is clear that there is little agreement as to what the term "empathy" actually denotes. Is empathy a basic, sui generis, form of intentionality directed at other experiencing subjects, is it a form of inner imitation that relies on mirror-resonance mechanisms, or is it, for instance, only permissible to talk of "empathy" when a person reaches an understanding of another's mental state by way of imagining what it is like for that other person to be in the situation she is in. Recent proponents of a phenomenologically inspired embodied and enactive approach to social cognition have emphasized the primacy of the direct face-to-face encounter. But isn't interpersonal understanding always contextual, and isn't this something that thinkers in the tradition of phenomenological social theory (such as Heidegger, Gurwitsch and Schutz) have repeatedly emphasized.
